Last year 14 quit – seven men and seven women – and in 2006 and 2005 some 23 would-be officers handed in their notice each year.

One in nine South Yorks police recruits drop out

By Claire Lewis
ONE in nine police officers recruited by South Yorkshire Police over the last seven years has dropped out before finishing their probationary period, The Star can reveal today.
Under the Freedom of Information Act the police force has revealed that, of the 1,369 officers it recruited between 2000 and 2007, a total of 147 resigned before the end of the two year period.

Last year 14 quit – seven men and seven women – and in 2006 and 2005 some 23 would-be officers handed in their notice each year.

The highest number of probationary officers to leave the force in recent years was in 2004, when 27 quit.

Those who leave before the end of their initial 17-week block of intensive training, or the two year probationary period, are not obliged to give the force a reason for their decision.

They are also not required to pay back any of the salary they have been paid over that time. Shocked

IMHO only, another good reason why a probationer at ANY job should be paid a lower rate than someone who has passed their qualifying period and shown that they will stick at the job even when it turns nasty.

This is only the tip of the iceburg. I am aware that GMP looses quite a few too due to a variety of reasons.

Before we get carried away, are there any available drop-out statistics for more than the last few years? Who's to say this kind of fall out rate isn't normal....

These stats are no surprise, I would suggest that if you look at forces that do heavy recruitment then you will probably get higher "drop out" rates.

Just look at most BCU's (Basic Command Unit) within forces, I would suggest that most frontline sector/beat/response duties are covered by those at the start of their career. Does not matter where or when but I recall 2 young officers who took their life's within a 12mths period from one BCU, not for me to say what had happened in their lifes as I do not know but would guess that the pressure and stress of being a young bobbie trying to keep your head above water could have been a factor.

I see Jezza's point with lower pay and perhaps I could raise that a proby is paid less then a seasoned PC. As some say you stop taking crime reports/statements when you join a specialist dept because the previous 4-5 years of blood sweet and headbanging have got you there - besides new probies always need the pratice !!!!

Should I wish to be totally un-PC, I suspect part of the problem is that because of lowered standards and positive discrimination to meet diversity targets, some of the recruits were never really suitable in the first place.

However, as GERROF says, you also need to look at the historical statistics
