An early 1980s large fold out Windsor Safari Park guide, found by Taximan - contains classic images and info "down the years," of that great late place.
Elephants Camels and Llamas, they're all here
A very large guide book turned up by Taximan in good condition contains many super pictures from the early days of Windsor Safari Park. Check out the photo of a TV cameraman in with a baby elephant and the 2 parents lumbering out of the elephant pool. This pool was just at the start of the vehicle safari route (on the right as you drove in) - what a great route that was. Also, how about the hairy warning to all visitors about not getting out of your car!! Despite this warning, rangers had to "deal" with some visitors who - plainly - could see no danger and thought all animals were cuddly!
This little elephant is going out live on ITV!!
I always wondered why the elephants couldn't go in with the zebras and giraffes, but I guess there was a reason. If you visit any safari park, the elephants are always on their own. Port Lympne (Kent) has a great Elephant area, in fact it has two areas for them - including a pool as good as the one that was at Windsor Safari Park. The purple line on the map appears to show the safari route but I'm pretty sure that the white lines "connecting" allowed visitors to drive in at 'alternate' points. A green map with a purple squiggly is the route Camels are very popular in Egypt this time of year
HILLTOP was a fabbo place in those days The parrot show was always a laugh The parrot show was a really famous component of HILLTOP. Quite often the parrot show would be packed to the gills and the parrots would be working overtime to make sure they did all their tricks to top standard. My favourite was always the "trick cyclist stunt" - which was yours? Hilltop Parrot Show and magnificent birds of prey! Plenty of things to see on a walkabout on Hilltop Does anybody have a video film of the Parrot Show please? If we could convert a 1 minute clip to mpeg, this would be such a marvellous download to offer visitors to the site. Talking about parrots, I do seem to remember seeing quite a few of my relatives - with parrots flapping about in their LOUNGE when I was a lad - but years on, people just do not seem to be interested in giving a parrot a good home now, sheesh what is the matter with the great parrot loving public?
Who remembers this awesome circular aviary? Who remembers the TROPICAL HOUSE? It had butterflies galore, terrific tropical fauna and trees and hacking your way through the jungle paths and humidity you came to a quaint bridge, moving over it: there - 2 mighty alligators ready to make your day!! Well, the round aviary was just around the corner from there I'm sure!! From the top of the park you looked down on the boating lake and across to St. Leonard's House (Licensed Bar!!) These views show the gigantic areas of Windsor Safari Park
Just check out these great views! The Rhinos have plenty of room to charge about there don't they!! But what are those buildings with spirally triangular sloping rooves? Anybody remember? And there was the famous "kiss a dolphin trainer day" at Seaworld! That is some leap of faith isn't it? Just a few seats left, I think I'll pop along and enjoy the show, SEE YA LATER!! (yeah... I wish) And then the boating lake was a great half hour's jaunt with the kids, St Leonard's mansion in the background of course. |

![]() | this guide, found by TAXIMAN, is such a joy to punt through isn't it? Click on that panel to the left for ZOOM 1, then click on it AGAIN for ZOOM 2 and that goes for most images on these pages, always give them a click, to see if they will ZOOM at all, then click again for full zoom! So what do we have with this HILLTOP area of the park? Well there is the incredibly popular SEAWORLD of course, marked with a black dolphin icon. Below that a black rhino icon marks the Rhinos paddock and to the right, you see the mansion - the park's very own "St Leonard's House" where TAXIMAN got to know many of the staff who worked and lived there. Taximan motored around in an awesome Cortina Mk III 2000GXL, had it about a year. He then copped a Granada 3000 Ghia Manual ! 'N' reg. It was was one of only 6 Granada 3litre Manual Ghias ever made, as all others were auto. Boy, did that shift as it was basically a Granada S engine/ gears/ suspension in a Ghia body. Hehe yes oh boy, I can just see it now Taximan, them were the days alright. | ![]() |

If you click on that map to the right you will see TWO education centres, yes TWO. Have a look on the map - it zooooms to full size, you will then see two yellow buildings plotted on the map. The highest shown is the "Animalarium" with the lowest the "actual Education Centre" comprising a large classroom for school children on their visits and an interesting museum. It was smack next to the children's farm which I always preferred to be honest but going back to the Education Centre this was staffed by some wonderful people one of whom was SONIA REILLY a great Windsor Safari Park enthusiast who joined the site in 2003 and provided many photos for us here and on PBASE.
80s MAP!!
<< This map is the best one in the whole guide!!
How crucial is it I mean, there are so many places on there that take your right back, for instance that number 34 next to the Boating Lake "The Animalarium" I am sure was stripped out and made something different in the late 1980s because I remember going in there to see some kind of puppet show (that was actually very enjoyable for kids!!) and it was definitely not an "Animalarium" then. On the other hand, when you look at that map there does seem to be one heck of a lot of stuff missing!!
Hehe I guess because it hasn't been built yet :-)
Hey check out the baboons, they are in danger of escaping ..... OFF THE BOTTOM OF THE MAP!!
here is a list of some of the more popular locations plotted on the map above (CLICK ON MAP TO ZOOOOM)

Heeey, I was only kidding about the wing mirrors, I meant CAR AERIELS!
Baboons seemed fascinated by those and had exponentially more room than the chimps, who had no interest in car aeriels whatever, must be a moral in the story there somewhere, but talking about chimps - if you look at the map, the chimps are situated about as far up the park as you can go. Now remember that you had to drive in at the coach station end, then straight onto the safari route and past the flamingos and rhinos to the car park, right at the top, by the Tropical House. So basically, the first thing you saw was the good old PARROT SHOW!! Remember that?
Thank you Taximan for submitting this totally awesome material, it has been a joy to look over, unfortunately I could not jettison any further k from the load but I think the "cost" is worth it. These materials that you have kindly submitted have been excellent to enjoy, thanks so much again!!
